As a child, Wilma Jones' memories are of playing with crayons and
coloring books. It was only about five years ago that she resumed the
enjoyment of creating art. In the meantime, she and her husband, Jim,
ran a music store and raised their family. Because of his personal
enjoyment with making music, he saw a potential in Wilma for art and knew it
would be enriching for her. He was aware of her admiration of oil
painting and he encouraged that interest. Although she was timid about
getting started, they discovered that a friend from their church, Betty
Anderson taught painting; Wilma took lessons.
She currently paints using photographs for inspiration and reference.
Her son-in-law is a professional photographer; this has helped her focus on
creating portraits, especially of her family. Wilma also enjoys
painting landscapes of special places that she has visited.
This past year Wilma has won four awards at the Associated Artists' artwork
of the month competition. Three were for portraits of family members
and a landscape from a trip she took to Lake Erie.
Wilma continues to pursue lessons on an informal basis. She is an
active member of the Associated Artists of the Inland Empire.
