SUSAN ALDERSON

COLOR THEORY & FRAMING

The love Susan Alderson holds for watercolor shines through in her creations.  Painting since 1994, Susan has earned recognition from the art community as evident through her many award winning paintings.  The attention to details along with the color theory that she perceives make her paintings burst with life, appearing as though you could reach out and touch the subject matter.  Formal studies with Kathy Quiel, Linda Gunn, and Jan Kunz, in addition to studying color theory with Nita Leland plus Stephen Quiller, allow her personal interpretation to amalgamate color theory with Composition and brush technique.

As an owner and instructor at Brushworks Art Studio, Susan's students benefit from learning the value of a well thought out plan for each of their paintings.  A simple "Learn as You Go Approach to Color Theory" as it applies to the emotional and structural content of each painting has benefited her students.  In particular, Susan's instruction emphasizes the artist's consideration of value, intensity, temperature with unity in one's painting through the use of a color scheme and a limited palette.

Susan has a remarkable gift of being able to instruct students how to layer colors bringing depth, clarity, and a  "glowing" life into their projects.  While applying a limited palette and in-depth planning of each painting, Susan's students are winning awards as well as selling their art.  Through discerning the critical details, along with the placement of deep final "little jewels," Susan and her students craft paintings that are truly an artistic creation.

In addition, Susan generously gives of her time to the community and schools through judging local art shows as well as demonstrating watercolor techniques at the Orange County Fair, the Los Angeles County Fair, local art associations and art groups.

Children through adults will benefit from studying with Susan Alderson.  Her motto, "Being an artist is not a gift you are born with, but a gift you give yourself," is exactly right.
