PHYLLIS MARKWITH

WATERCOLOR
Phyllis Markwith
Happiness keynotes the work of Phyllis Markwith, in her prolific
painting, her direction of creative workshops for art groups, and in her
teaching. Her painting demonstrations for such noteworthy
organizations as The Laguna Beach Gallery Association, exhibit a
forceful imaginative touch, influenced by a love for oriental
calligraphy.
Her roots go back to Detroit, Michigan, where as a youngster, she took a
bus to the Detroit Art Institute to spend the day watching Diego Rivera
paint murals. Here in the Southland, influential instructors
include: Cal Bates, James Cooper Wright, Watson Cross, Bob Eucker, and
Rex Brandt. Studies with Waihang Lai instilled a lifelong flavor
of the oriental in many of her watercolors.
Mrs. Markwith displays an unusual versatility in her list of
accomplishments from eighty foot murals to tiny miniatures. Her
strong but sensitive watercolors have won many top awards throughout
Southern California. Her subjects cover the entire spectrum from
realistic landscapes and still lifes to complete abstractions. Her
paintings can be found in many galleries and private collections
throughout the Southland. |
